About Immune Strategies
Finding new and better ways to counter infectious diseases, autoimmunity, and allergy
Autoimmune diseases, which include type 1 diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis, thyroid disease and rheumatoid arthritis, represent the third greatest clinical burden in the world after heart disease and cancer. The battle against infectious diseases has been won on a number of fronts including the worldwide eradication of smallpox, but other battlefronts have been opened with the challenge of fighting new and re-emerging diseases including HIV, SARS and avian influenza.
The Immune Strategies Research Group at Flinders University is a major national centre for immunology, infectious disease and inflammation research, with a particular focus on translational clinical research. Its research ranges across the spectrum from basic immunology design and development, to vaccine and immunotherapy clinical trials. Its members are researchers from the physical sciences, mathematics, engineering and imaging, with expertise covering infectious disease, the innate immune system, vaccines, autoantibody-mediated diseases, inflammatory eye disease, allergy, diabetes, vascular disease, neuroscience, monoclonal antibody production, diagnostic tests, and pharmacology.
A strong early focus of the group’s work is the global fight against avian flu. Work also is proceeding on investigating new approaches to developing vaccinations for a range of other diseases, including hepatitis and malaria. This research is being conducted in collaboration with a leading Australian biotechnology company.
